Rev Rev Rev – “Clutching The Blade” Single Review

When I woke up this morning I said “hmm, I hope I happen across some awesome Italian noise rock today.” The universe must have listened because that’s exactly what I found. Modena based band Rev Rev Rev have recently dropped a new single called “Clutching The Blade”, so here’s my two cents.

This track packs some serious punch. The combination of noisey reverbed guitars, growling basslines and eerie vocals was not what I expected from this band, but it sure as hell cleared out my eardrums. Stadium worthy lead vocals sit on top of a fuzz fuelled symphony of energetic ghostly tones, while intense blasts of screeching distortion sprinkle themselves into the mix as an occasional one-two punch. This track is pure obscure noise rock / shoegaze, and I’m pretty sure it could clean out all the dust from my loft if I played it loud enough. This week Rev Rev Rev are jetting off to Austin to play a grand total of five shows at the one and only SXSW showcase. I really hope Texas is ready for the fuzz.

“Clutching The Blade is a good snapshot of our sonic virulence. Among the new songs, it’s the one that truly conveys the energy of our live show, whilst keeping a mechanic feel that contributes to the ominous atmosphere. The song itself is about being trapped in the quicksand of a certain situation, or what can feel like destiny, and the appalling feeling that the more you struggle, the faster you sink.”– The band explain.

This band are certainly a stand out from the noise rock scene. Having recently signed to the London based label Fuzz Club, I hope that I’ll get the chance to catch them live soon, but I think I’ll need to invest in a heavy duty set of ear protection before I do.
